Want to change your business name on Google Business Profile but worried the process might fail? In this article, we’ll show you how to edit your Profile name to maintain visibility in local search results and ensure a professional online image for your business.
Can I change my business name on Google and keep my reviews?
Google allows editing of the Business Profile name, but only in specific cases and according to guidelines. Incorrect changes may be rejected or lead to the suspension of your listing. However, if the update concerns the same business and is carried out correctly, all existing reviews will remain assigned to the Profile and will not negatively affect its credibility.
When Does Google Allow a Business Name Change?
Changing the Business Profile name is possible if it is justified and reflects the actual state of affairs. Google will approve the modification in the following situations:
- official change, e.g., after rebranding, a merger, or adding a legal form, in accordance with registration documents (KRS, CEIDG, REGON);
- typo corrections, e.g., Firma XYZ instead of Fimra XYZ;
- name standardization – when the name on the signboard, website, and company documents differs from that on the Business Profile only in minor details.

When Does Google Not Allow a Business Name Change?
Google, in turn, rejects modifications that do not comply with the guidelines. This especially applies to names that contain:
- additional keywords to improve local SEO, e.g., Pizza Warsaw – The Best;
- marketing slogans, XYZ Hair Salon – Exclusive Hairstyle for You;
- store codes most often used for internal communication;
- trademark registration symbol, i.e., the ® symbol next to the company name;
- words written only in capital letters, e.g., FLOWERS;
- opening hours information, Neighborhood store open 24/7;
- contact details – phone number, website address;
- special characters, legal terms – e.g., %, $ or Ltd.; however, if they are part of the official name, when entering it in the Business Profile, you will need to attach documents or a photo of the signboard confirming the consistent use of the symbol or abbreviation in the company name;
- information about products or services – Bicycle shop – we sell Romet bikes ;
- location information – Grocery store on Sikorskiego Street;
- information about the company’s location within another company’s premises, in an office building, or a shopping mall – Grocery store in Wroclavia shopping mall.

Common Problems with Changing Your Business Name on Google Business Profile
When updating your listing, you may encounter certain issues that limit Profile visibility and cause temporary drops in local search results.
Rejected Business Name
Google may reject a business name due to, among other things, a lack of supporting documents or non-compliance with guidelines. In such a situation:
- Check compliance with guidelines – ensure that the new name meets Google’s rules.
- Prepare documents (excerpt from KRS/CEIDG or photos of the signboard) confirming the new name.
- Retry editing in accordance with the attached documents.
- If necessary, contact support (https://support.google.com/business#topic=4596754), attach documents and describe the problem.
If the change is rejected again, send an appeal, documenting the actual business name.
New Business Name in Panel and Old Name on Google Maps
Sometimes it also happens that we see the updated Profile name in the panel, but the old name still appears on Google Maps and in search results.
- Clear the cache of your browser and Google Maps app.
- Report the problem via Send feedback in the GBP panel.
- Contact Google support and include screenshots showing the differences between the information in the panel and on Google Maps.

Can a business name affect listing ranking?
Changing your business name in Google Business Profile usually does not harm local SEO, as long as the new name complies with official company documents and Google’s current guidelines. However, it’s important to remember that every name edit triggers a re-indexing process for the listing, which may temporarily affect its visibility.
- After a name change, Google usually needs 1-4 weeks for a full re-indexing of the listing. During this time, the listing’s visibility may temporarily drop, but it usually stabilizes after the process is complete.
- In the long run, a well-chosen, brand-consistent, and recognizable name can positively impact listing ranking in local search results.
- To monitor changes in visibility and traffic, it’s worth regularly analyzing data in the panel, under the Performance tab.
Can You Change Your Business Name in Google Business Profile? Summary
Changing your business name in Google Business Profile is possible, provided that it reflects the actual state of the business and complies with official documents and Google’s guidelines. A correctly performed update does not cause a permanent drop in visibility, though it may require time for full verification and data synchronization. The key to success is preparing the necessary materials confirming the official name change, patience while awaiting approval, and regularly monitoring the effects.
